Bull Housser

About Us

Background

Bull Housser traces its roots in Vancouver over one hundred and twenty years. Some of the leading figures of the province's past have worked at Bull Housser, and we have played an integral role in the development of British Columbia's economy as well as its legal system. We treasure our heritage of progressive, independent action, and the reputation we have built while serving our clients in our community. We have had a long tradition of building our firm and the local legal community through developing articling students into world class lawyers, and enjoy continuing in the development of our province's legal leadership.

Located in the heart of downtown Vancouver at the corner of Burrard and Georgia Streets, Bull Housser is literally just steps away from the very best of what Vancouver has to offer. Diversity and excitement abound in and around our beautiful city. Vancouver is home to an endless assortment of cultural festivals, ethnic celebrations, sporting events and outstanding cuisine. Natural beauty, a temperate climate, a safe and clean community and a thriving economy are just a few of the many reasons people of all ages choose to live, work and study in Vancouver.

A key component of the Bull Housser philosophy is creating a positive, cooperative work environment that allows all members of the firm – lawyers, students and staff alike – to thrive and develop to their full potential. We believe proof of this approach lies in the fact that we were ranked 11th among the “50 Best Small and Medium Employers in Canada” in 2012, and held the top spot for best law firm in Canada to work for, in a current study released by Queen’s Centre for Business Venturing at Queen’s School of Business in conjunction with Hewitt Associates. We were also presented with the BC Business Magazine / Watson Wyatt Worldwide Survey award ranking the firm as one of the Top 25 Companies To Work For In B.C. in 2005 and 2006. More recently, the firm ranked in the Top 10 Companies To Work For in B.C. in 2007.

Balancing Act

We are all familiar with the old adage about all work and no play. Although hard work and productivity will be key to your success as a lawyer, balance is also an essential component. To reinforce this point, the firm provides a generous benefits package, including a fitness membership subsidy, to our students.

We field a number of recreational seasonal teams and activities that all lawyers, staff and students are welcome and encouraged to join. Throughout your articles you will be invited to attend firm-organized student dinners, firm-wide themed events, the Winter Party, the Summer Party and more.

Firm Tours

Bull Housser hosts firm tours for law students, whether they are organized by careers officers at universities, student groups or individual students. We consider these tours an excellent opportunity for visiting students to meet with our lawyers and current students to ask questions about our firm, the student program and our culture. Please contact our Program Advisor to schedule a visit.

Selection Criteria

Our hires have demonstrated strong analytical abilities, excellent communication skills, a strong commitment to one's community, and a desire to take on challenging work in an environment that encourages students to take initiative and explore all areas of practice.  Candidates are evaluated using a holistic approach that values academic achievement, extracurricular activities, community involvement, and the ability to work with others in a fast-paced team environment.  We take pride in having no prescribed hiring quota and no rolling offers of admission.

Statistics

We do not maintain a hiring quota, choosing instead to make offers to all candidates that we believe will be a fit with our firm. As a result, the exact number of students we hire fluctuates from year to year.
